What Benefits Does Coworking Actually Add to Your Life?

The other day, I spent nearly eight hours working from home.

It was one of those days where everything just flowed. I was building systems, writing manuals, planning the future of Squadstyle, and making real progress. By every measure, it was a productive day.

Around 7:00 p.m., I looked at my Oura ring. I had taken 1,400 steps. That number stopped me in my tracks because it made me realize how easy it is for an entire day to disappear when your world exists within the same four walls.

My office, kitchen, living room, and gym were all within a few steps of each other. There was no commute. No reason to leave. No natural transition between work and life. If I hadn't intentionally walked to Sloan's Lake to watch the sunset that evening, I could have gone an entire day without really experiencing the world outside my home.

It made me think about environment.

Working From Home Isn't the Problem

I love working from home. The flexibility is incredible. I can structure my day however I want, work in comfortable clothes, make lunch in my own kitchen, and focus deeply without interruption.

The problem isn't working from home. The problem is that, if we're not careful, home quietly becomes everything. Our office. Our gym. Our restaurant. Our entertainment. Our place to rest.

Without realizing it, we stop changing environments throughout the day. We stop walking between places. We stop bumping into people. We stop having the tiny moments of connection that once happened naturally.

Nothing feels wrong - until one day you realize you've barely moved, barely spoken to anyone, and somehow the entire day has disappeared.

It's Not Networking That I Miss

When people hear the word coworking, they often imagine networking events, business cards, and constantly talking to strangers. That has never been what attracted me to coworking. In fact, I think many of us are looking for almost the opposite.

I jokingly describe Squadstyle as an anti-social social club. Many of our members genuinely enjoy their alone time. They don't necessarily want to be surrounded by loud conversations or large crowds all day. They simply don't want to spend every day alone. There's a difference.

Sometimes the best coworking days are the ones where everyone quietly works for hours, interrupted only by a quick coffee break or a conversation in the kitchen. You're working individually. Together. That subtle difference changes everything.

The Power of Being Witnessed

I've been trying to put words to what makes a community like Squadstyle feel different.

Five adults laugh and work on a jigsaw puzzle at a table under a wooden pavilion, with a red truck and industrial yard behind them.

I realized it's this: We witness each other's journeys. Not in a dramatic way. In a quiet one.

You see the person who's been showing up every Tuesday finally launch the business they've been talking about for months. You notice someone studying for an exam, then celebrate when they pass. You watch another member slowly regain confidence after a difficult season. You don't know every chapter of their story, but you know enough to cheer them on. And they do the same for you.

I think we underestimate how much human beings need that. Not constant attention. Not validation. Just the quiet reassurance that someone notices we're here. That someone sees us showing up. That our work matters to someone beyond ourselves.

Working from home can make work feel strangely invisible. You answer emails, build presentations, finish projects, and close your laptop. The work exists, but sometimes it feels almost imaginary because nobody experienced it with you.

In a coworking community, your journey becomes something that's gently witnessed. I think that's something many of us are missing more than we realize.

Environment Shapes Who We Become

One of my favorite quotes is:

We become a product of our environment.

Environment doesn't force our behavior. It quietly influences it.

When everyone around you eats lunch away from their desk, you're more likely to do the same. When someone heads to the gym after work, you're reminded that your own workout matters too. When people celebrate taking care of themselves instead of glorifying burnout, your definition of success slowly begins to change.

None of those moments happen because someone tells you what to do. They happen because healthy behaviors become normal. That's one of the reasons wellness has always been part of Squadstyle. People sometimes ask why we include a gym and sauna with coworking memberships. The answer isn't because we wanted more amenities. It's because wellness shouldn't be something you squeeze into your life after work. It should be woven into the rhythm of your day.

A workout between meetings. A walk outside when your brain needs a reset. Five minutes in the sauna before heading home. Those aren't interruptions to productivity. They're what make sustainable productivity possible.

Community Is Contagious

One thing I've noticed about our members is that very few would describe themselves as wellness experts. What they all seem to have in common is something much simpler. They're people who care about becoming a little healthier, a little happier, and a little more intentional than they were yesterday.

When enough people with that mindset come together, something remarkable happens. Healthy habits spread. Optimism spreads. Generosity spreads. Confidence spreads.

One person's courage gives another person permission to be courageous. One person's consistency inspires someone else to finally start.

The magic has never been the building. It's always been the people inside it.

Why Squadstyle Exists

For a long time, I thought Squadstyle was about coworking. Then I thought it was about coworking, fitness, and wellness. Today, I think it's about something even bigger. It's about creating an environment where people have the greatest chance of becoming the person they're trying to become.

We provide the space. Our members create the culture.

The conversations. The encouragement. The accountability. The friendships. The moments that completely change someone's direction, often without either person realizing it.

I've seen business partnerships begin over coffee. I've seen strangers become lifelong friends. I've watched people discover careers they never imagined. I've seen members leave healthier than when they arrived - not because of a single workout or a single conversation, but because of hundreds of small moments that accumulated over time.

Those moments can't be scheduled. They can't be automated. They can only happen when people choose to share a space.

More Than a Desk

People often ask what the value of coworking is. My answer has changed over the years.

It's not faster Wi-Fi. It's not unlimited coffee. It's not even having a beautiful place to work. Those things are nice, but they're not why people stay.

People stay because of how they feel. Because they move more. Because they laugh more. Because they remember to take breaks. Because someone asks how their project is going. Because they leave with more energy than they arrived with. Because, somewhere along the way, they stop feeling like they're building their life alone.

Looking back, I don't think the wake-up call was that I had only taken 1,400 steps.

It was realizing how much of life quietly disappears when we never leave our own little world. Coworking isn't about escaping your home office. It's about intentionally stepping into an environment that helps you become the person you want to be.

At Squadstyle, we happen to offer coworking, a gym, and a sauna. But what we're really creating is something much harder to define: a place where people feel seen and supported. We provide the space. Our members create the magic. Every conversation, collaboration, friendship, breakthrough, and personal transformation begins with people simply showing up.

And sometimes, all it takes is working alongside people who quietly remind you that you're not building your life alone.
