How can we help our body detox?

Metabolic Detoxification is a process by which the liver, kidneys, large intestine, lymphatic system, and sweat glands work together to process and remove toxins from the body. It is an ongoing process: every day, your body’s organs are working to eliminate environmental toxins that come in from bacteria, air pollution, plastics, and heavy metals, to name a few. Each person has a different toxic load resulting from toxic exposure, the health of their detoxifying organs, genetic factors, age, etc. Symptoms related to the buildup of toxins, include obesity, type 2 diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, hormonal imbalances, cancer, infertility, allergies, behavior and mood disorders, neurological conditions and cognitive difficulties.

The liver is the primary detoxifier of the body, as it takes insoluble molecules and converts them to soluble so the body can either use them or get rid of them. An example would be medication. If the liver could not do this function, you would never experience the effect of the medicine, because it would never be in a form that the body could use.

The inside of the GI tract is really the outside of your body, and the lining is a barrier that attempts to allow only beneficial substances into the body. The GI tract then eliminates what is not beneficial to the body. This is normal physiology. When this barrier is not working well “leaky gut” occurs, allowing unfamiliar molecules into the body causing inflammation and alarming the immune system. The health of the microbial world within the GI tract is crucial for the health of our entire body.

Often the focus of a Metabolic Detoxification is on these organs, as they are fundamental to the health of all of the tissues of the body. So how do we make these organs healthier and function more efficiently with this program? There are essentially two ways. One is to provide a diet rich in the specific nutrients needed for organ function, and two is removing foods that are irritating or harmful to these organs, allowing the organs to “rest.” The idea that you can cleanse or flush these organs to “detox” them is shortsighted. Rather, improving the function of the detoxification organs of the body will allow your body to process chemicals, hormones, etc. efficiently.

Although many people may not feel “sick” the statistics regarding the amount of chemicals in humans tells the real story of the world we live in today and its impact on our health. A Metabolic Detoxification program works to lower the body’s’ toxic load, while simultaneously working on nutrition and lifestyle strategies to promote efficient elimination of toxins. Taking the time to care for these vital organs, no matter what age or health status, will make the body more capable of eliminating toxins and allow for more normal physiology.

The benefits of this program include improved digestion and liver function, decreased inflammation and pain, increased energy, less “brain fog” and much more. Most people maintain some of the healthy practices learned during the program and some even lose weight. Believe it or not, a 2-3 week individually tailored program can provide significant changes. This program is offered 10/11/23 to 11/11/23 at Squadstyle Work and Wellness by Dr. Leah Griswold.
